Baker and Baker Recruitment are recruiting for an exciting opportunity for a Packaging Engineer, for a start-up based in the Warwickshire area.

Job Title: Lead Packaging Engineer

Salary: c£60k (Depending on Experience)

1. Development of cohesive Packaging Strategy

2. Project planning and execution

3. Confirming project status regarding Packaging developments (from Concept – Design – Prototype –


4. Training and development of Packaging engineers

5. Technical and Commercial engagement with Packaging Suppliers

6. Support 'what-If' Supply Chain Scenario Options

7. Root cause and countermeasure of Design and Supply of Packaging problems

8. Support pre-production build events – validation of Packaging design

9. Travel to suppliers (Typically Europe and Asia)

10. Other tasks as assigned by a line manager



Decision-making authorities

  • Judge and propose suitable Packaging concepts for new parts
  • Approve internal and external control documentation
  • Approve packaging for use in pre-production, mass production, and Service
  • Approve optimum packaging population to ensure no disruption to production
  • Agree root cause analysis and countermeasure proposals where technical or commercial issues  arise
  • Implementation of improvement and recovery activities to meet the needs of the program


Managerial authorities

  • Manage a team of packaging engineers
  • Manage internal and external Stakeholder expectations and requirements
  • Ensure tasks for the project are cascaded and completed by the team
  • Reporting project status for the team



  • Develop and coach the packaging engineers to be able to achieve the requirements of their role.
  • Identify project risks and ensure appropriate actions are in place to minimise the occurrence of risk.
  • Ensure packaging supplier project plans are in-line with targets and complete regular project reviews and resolve issues as they arise.
  • Take a lead role with the development and maturation of the complex packaging requirements



  • Develop a Packaging Manual, ensuring standardisation of Packaging Dimensions, materials, Engineering Standards, Volume planning, project planning etc.
  • Confirm suitable Packaging Designers and Manufacturers that have the capability and capacity to meet the needs of the program.
  • Validation of Packaging supplier costs, ensuring 'best value'
  • Confirm all packaging complies with Regulatory requirements
  • Appraise packaging concepts for optimum QCD performance. Validate Packaging Designs and Prototypes. Conduct Packaging/shipping trials to gain full Stakeholder Buy-in and Sign off.
  • Establish and maintain the Packaging development database, ensuring accurate 'attribute' data is available to input to the ERP system
  • Support the establishment of the Packaging budget and manage any updates as part data matures.
  • Ensure packaging expenditure is kept within the agreed budget and reported at each Program Gateway.
  • Conduct regular audits at packaging suppliers to confirm project status and Packaging delivery plans.
  • Support Part Design change management process with Internal and External stakeholders, ensuring packaging is at the correct design level and available for use.
  • Reporting project status to internal stakeholders.



  • Ability to develop and apply an optimum QCD Packaging strategy, for both Inbound and Outbound Automotive Supply Chains.
  • Experience in Automotive or industrial packaging is essential as well as knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation and specification standards (ISO, etc.).
  • Demonstrable proficiency in reading engineering drawings and 3D CAD models is needed.
  • Appreciation of manufacturing processes and key controls used in the automotive industry supply base.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of problem-solving and have a logical approach to understanding root cause and apply appropriate countermeasures.
  • Demonstrate good project management skills (Prince 2 or Agile qualification desirable).
  • Qualified engineer (ideally to degree level).
  • Excellent leadership skills and cast a positive shadow
  • Willingness to make recommendations and bring new innovative ideas to the table that will improve the business competitiveness.
  • Ability to manage and use initiative for unplanned situations - be able to negotiate to overcome and resolve obstacles
  • Working in a pressurised environment with changing and often conflicting priorities - Taking ownership of the project and providing solutions to problems.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
